I have made it my mission in life to find out all I can about the history of food. I watched the PBS series Diary of a Foodie and it made me think. Why does the media and by product of do regular people at home give such a credence to these so called "experts?" While watching with angrier eyes I see a beautiful young woman with a slight lisp that betrays her Spaniard upbringing discussing peppers with a wrinkled, older Mexican woman making tortas from scratch and putting ridiculously hot peppers on a sauce and all I can think as she spoke her "proper" Spanish, was the utter contempt she was showing this lady who had allowed her into her somewhat, okay very modest colorful home. She then went to a very high brow restaurant and seemed much more comforted with words like reduction sauce and foie gras (which I hate more than Veal) but she did inspire me to go out.
Since it was a beautiful New York Sunday, I shall go out to a fancy restaurant, for Brunch. I did enjoy the food and I can see why the need for a show like that, however the food for all it's lovely presentation, seems to be a whole lot of nothing. Beautiful. Empty. Devoid of the heart that makes home cooking so vastly superior. Culinary schools, "cooking" shows that are more about tight camera angles and spouting that you too can become a great cook nay a CHEF.
But I like my own kitchen thank you very much. Besides, I know how to cook from watching the experts, Grandmothers who can whip up a meal with 5 ingredients and have it be the most delicious thing you have ever eaten than some over thought, large plated, fussy "meal" where I still need to go grab a slice of pizza to feel full and all I see is that my foodie experience has left me with an empty stomach and emptier wallet.
My foodie days are done. I will stick to what I know best, eating great meals they way they are for most of us when we are growing up, at home. I am not a "foodie" but am I pretentious?
Cheers!
